Aesthetic Surgery of the Ears

The Otoplasty is the surgical procedure that corrects the defects of position and folding of the auricular pavilion. Is indicated to correct the prominent ears, to reduce its size or to modify its form. Most of these interventions are made in patients between the 4 and 15 years, although a good number of patients decide this intervention in their maturity.

PLANNING THE SURGERY

You have to take into account the concern of a young patient about its ears. Do not insist on the surgery until he/she does not decide it by his own will. The young patients that wish the surgery cooperate throughout the process more and are happier with the result. In the initial consultation the Dr.Tagliapietra will evaluate the possibilities and will recommend the most effective technique to correct the defect.  He also will give the specific presurgical instructions.

TYPES OF ANESTHESIA

This intervention is made generally in outpatient basis. In case of children general anesthesia could be recommended, otherwise local anesthesia with sedation is the method of choice, so that he is wide-awake but relaxed during the intervention.

THE SURGERY

An incision is made in the back of the ear exposing the cartilage, modifying its projection, being able to excise a small portion of cartilage or simply modifying its shape by means of stitches. Once obtained the wished result the incision is closed and the shape preserved by molding with moisted cotton and an elastic bandage.

RETURNING TO NORMALITY

A bandage must be used by 48 hours to mold the ears and to avoid the postoperative swelling. After the first 48 hs. the bandages are replaced by a hair band of smooth compression, to be used every night for 30 days. The stitches will stay for seven to ten days.

Most of the patients are extremely satisfied with the result obtained by the intervention. But the real goal is the improvement, not it perfection. You must talk with the Dr Tagliapietra about your expectations and you surely will be pleased with the result.
